Project64

Originally developed in 2001 and bringing in its latest release in 2017, Project64 is a Nintendo 64 emulator available as an open source program. It can be found and downloaded for free. It is hard to tell whether or not it was abandoned though. It is written in C and it is specifically done for Microsoft Windows. Despite not having a great compatibility with other operating systems, Project 64 is rated as one of the most popular choices out there due to its lack of major bugs and superior smoothness. There is a different version of it for Android though.

Project 64 has also gained popularity because of its implementation of third party plugins. Basically, third parties can run their own plugins and bring access to specific features. Other than that, the emulator can support Nintendo 64 games on computers, but it does not include any ROM images. Since they are copyrighted, gamers must find such images themselves.
